How to read a VIN, character by character
A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a vehicle's unique 17-character identifier. Decoding it reveals its origin, manufacturer, model and year. It reads in three blocks.
Manufacturer & country
Who built the vehicle, and in which country.
Specifications
Model, body type, engine, safety.
Year, plant, serial
The 10th character gives the year; the last ones, the unique serial number.
Three places to spot the VIN
Before decoding a VIN, you first have to find it. On most vehicles it appears in three places — and should be identical everywhere.
Driver side, visible from the outside.
On the label, driver side.
And on the insurance card.
Use your license plate

Decoding doesn't tell the whole story
Decoding a VIN reveals what the vehicle is (its specs). A history report reveals what it lived through: accidents, mileage, title, theft.
